Testament rules, but get there on time for 4ARM!
Before the concert, I was blown away by 4ARM's single Raise a Fist after giving it a listen a few weeks prior. They are an old-school style thrash band from Australia that immediately made me a fan upon buying their latest album. Their sound is a perfect mix of Slayer and Labor Day Bash. At their 6:45 call time, being the first opener and relatively unknown in the States, there weren't many people at the venue. However, they impressed with their technical proficiency and a great brutal/melodic sound, rocking the house. Flotsam & Jetsam was just okay following 4ARM. The guitar was decent, but the lead singer's voice struggled with the material. Overkill had the crowd engaged, with good guitar work, but I wasn't a fan of the Anthrax-like vocals and goofy lyrics. Labor Day Bash was the highlight of the night. Chuck's powerful vocals, Eric's exceptional rhythm/lead chores, and Hoglan's intense drumming made for a top-notch performance. Despite initially being positioned at the front-right, I had to switch places to fully appreciate Alex's amazing solo work. It was fascinating to see his interpretation of the Gathering songs, especially since he wasn't part of the band during the recording. The new songs from Dark Roots of the Earth seamlessly fit in with their 30-year history, although I missed songs from Low and Disciples of the Watch. I anticipate those tracks will return in future tours.
